Skincare, fragrance, sunscreen and jewelry all belong in a normal getting-ready routine—but the order matters. Products that land directly on metal and stones can leave a film that catches dust and softens the sparkle you see.
Products First, Jewelry Last
Apply lotion, sunscreen, perfume, makeup, and hair products before reaching for earrings or a necklace. Give everything time to dry, then add jewelry as the last step. At night, reverse the order: jewelry off before cleansing, showering, or adding more skincare.
It is a simple rule, but it also solves a very common mystery: “Why does this clear stone suddenly look cloudy?” Oil-based residue can change how light reaches the surface even when the piece is not permanently damaged.
Be Extra Mindful Around Plating
A plated finish is a surface layer, so repeated direct exposure and rubbing deserve care. Avoid spraying fragrance onto a necklace after it is on, and try not to trap fresh hand cream beneath rings.
If a piece picks up product, start with a gentle wipe using a soft, dry cloth. For anything beyond that, follow the maker’s directions for the entire piece. A cleaner described as suitable for one stone may not be suitable for its plating, adhesive, or other components.
Sunscreen Days Need a Storage Plan
Take jewelry off before applying or reapplying sunscreen. If you are heading to the beach or pool, a dry, secure case is a better home than a bag pocket beside wet towels. Removing jewelry before swimming also avoids combining product buildup with water, chemicals, salt, sand, and loss risk.
