The safest place for jewelry is not always on you. Water, impact, products, friction, and one distracted moment near a drain can turn an ordinary routine into a repair—or a very frustrating search.
Rather than memorizing a long list, build a few “take it off” moments into the day.
At the Bathroom Door
Remove jewelry before showering, bathing, skincare, perfume, hairspray, makeup removal, or hair coloring. Soap and product residue can collect around settings, and small pieces are much harder to recover once water is running. Finish the routine, let products dry, then put jewelry on.
Before Water Plans
Pools, hot tubs, the ocean, and lakes add different combinations of chemicals, salt, sand, temperature changes, and loss risk. Take jewelry off before applying sunscreen and before entering the water. Store it securely at home or in a dry case—not loose beside a damp towel.
At the Gym or Workbench
Weights and tools can press against rings; necklaces and bracelets may catch; sweat and dust can leave residue. The same logic applies to cleaning and DIY tasks involving household products, abrasives, or impact. Remove pieces before starting and use the protective equipment appropriate to the activity.
Before Bed
Chains can tangle, posts can press, and prongs may snag fabric. Taking jewelry off at night also creates a useful ten-second inspection: is the clasp closing properly, is a stone moving, or is a prong catching?
If anything feels loose, damaged, or irritating, stop wearing the piece until it can be checked. Material and construction vary, so follow the maker’s care instructions for the complete item rather than assuming one routine suits every piece.
